Rupert Murdoch’s News Ltd Australia appoints Cummins Power Generation

Australia’s largest newspaper publisher, News Ltd, has chosen Cummins Power Generation to supply its Sydney headquarters with a new turn-key power solution.Media Mogul Rupert Murdoch owns News Ltd publications, which account for around 70% of Australia’s circulation; it electronically produces principal dailies such as The Australian (Australia’s only national daily broadsheet), The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Telegraph.Cummins Power Generation, world renowned reliable and quality power systems provider, is needed to develop an emergency power system to ensure the News Ltd's data centre, which operates round the clock worldwide is kept running and producing its publications.Cummins Power Generation put together a power package for News Ltd that comprised of three Cummins C350 D5 generator sets complete with Cummins PowerCommand 3100 digital paralleling equipment and a Cummins DMC1000 digital master control system. To serve the needs of News Ltd, the Cummins C350 D5 generator sets work in conjunction with a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) system of batteries. In the event of a mains failure, the UPS system maintains power supply until the three generator sets come online and take over within 10 seconds. On the other hand, the Cummins DMC1000 digital master control system monitors the building load, provides load control as well as provides a function called load demand which ensures the generator sets running, are only those needed to meet the building’s demands. This effectively reduces unnecessary running of the generators and improves fuel economy. A large challenge that Cummins Power Generation faced was to maintain emergency power to News Ltd headquarters during the removal of the old generator sets and installation of the new system to keep the headquarters at maximum operational efficiency. David Van Brussel, Contracts Manager, Cummins South Pacific and Greg Conrad, Sales Executive, Cummins South Pacific, both of whom headed up this turn-key project, provided a solution by working closely with News Ltd to co-ordinate the installation of a temporary 750 kVA Cummins PowerGeneration QST30 generator set. This allowed Cummins Power Generation to gut the plant room, install the new generator sets, generator switchboard and DMC1000, and fully test the new emergency power generator system in only four weeks before use.The C350 D5 is backed by a comprehensive warranty and worldwide distributor network - providing top-notch quality service, excellent after-sales support and instilling confidence in the client in Cummins Power Generation’s products and capability have always and will continue to be what sets Cummins Power Generation apart from its contemporaries.
