Hitachi Energy partners with Adani Energy Solutions to boost Mumbai power supply
New link delivers up to 1,000 MW of electricity.
Hitachi Energy and Adani Energy Solutions Ltd. have commissioned a major high-voltage direct current (HVDC) infeed in Mumbai, boosting the city’s external power supply by 50%.
The new HVDC link is capable of injecting up to 1,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity directly into the densely populated metropolis, enhancing energy reliability and resilience for more than 20 million residents. The Kudus–Aarey connection strengthens Mumbai’s transmission network by enabling greater power imports from outside the city.
Powered by advanced Voltage Source Converter (VSC) technology from Hitachi Energy, the system allows precise and rapid control of electricity flow whilst improving voltage stability and overall grid reliability. The upgrade to the Aarey converter station represents Mumbai’s most significant grid modernisation effort in nearly 25 years, expanding capacity from 250 MW to 1,000 MW.
The converter station was designed with a compact footprint and uses a combination of overhead lines and underground HVDC cables, freeing up approximately 2 square kilometers of urban land.
The system draws power through the Kudus grid connection, sourcing electricity from regions across Maharashtra and renewable-rich areas within India’s national grid.
With its ability to transmit power efficiently through limited urban space whilst minimising congestion, noise, and environmental impact, the project is seen as a model for other rapidly growing cities in India and around the world facing rising energy demands and infrastructure constraints.
