India injects INR 20,000 crore for Nuclear Energy Mission
At least five SMRs will be operationalised.
The government of India has presented its budget for 2025 to 2026, which includes the allocation of INR 20,000 crore for the setting up of the Nuclear Energy Mission.
According to the Ministry of Finance, the mission will focus on research and development of small modular reactors (SMR). At least five indigenously developed SMRs will be operationalised by 2033.
Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman said the development of at least 100 gigawatts of nuclear energy by 2047 is essential for the country’s energy transition efforts. Amendments to the Atomic Energy Act and the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act will be considered to encourage more private sector involvement.
