India installs nearly 30 GW of solar and wind power in FY 2025

Solar alone increased over 50% from last year.

India continues to expand its renewable energy capacity as it installed nearly 30,000 megawatts (MW) of solar and wind power in fiscal year (FY) 2025 from April 2024 to March 2025.

According to JMK Research & Analytics, installations for both solar and wind increased by 58.5% to 23,832 MW and 27.9% to 4,151 MW, respectively, from the previous year.

“This significant rise in solar installed capacity can be due to strong momentum of the green open access market driven by corporate decarbonisation initiatives and decline in module prices in the second half of FY2024,” the company said.

The installed solar power includes 16.9 gigawatts (GW) of new utility-scale capacity and 1,785 MW of off-grid/distributed solar.

For wind power, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat accounted for 82% of India’s wind installations.

Data from India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy showed that the country’s installed renewable energy has reached  220 GW as of FY 2025. Solar accounted for 48% of the total capacity followed by wind energy (23%), large hydro (22%), biopower (5%), and small hydro (2%).
