JERA, Samsung C&T sign MoU on hydrogen, ammonia supply chains
Collaboration supports Japan and South Korea energy security.
JERA Co., Inc. and Samsung C&T Corporation have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore collaboration on strengthening hydrogen and ammonia value chains and improving supply security.
The companies will study ways to increase operational flexibility across hydrogen and ammonia supply chains, including managing and segregating carbon intensity attributes in storage facilities such as tanks.
The partnership comes as Japan and South Korea seek to strengthen energy security and accelerate the use of low-carbon fuels.
Both countries rely heavily on imported energy and are investing in hydrogen and ammonia as part of their decarbonization strategies.
JERA is developing Japan's first integrated low-carbon ammonia value chain, covering production, transportation and utilisation, with operations targeted to begin around fiscal year 2029.
Samsung C&T is advancing low-carbon ammonia infrastructure and supply chain projects in South Korea.
Both companies have also secured government support for their low-carbon ammonia initiatives. JERA was selected as a supplier under Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) price gap support scheme for low-carbon hydrogen and its derivatives, whilst Samsung C&T continues to expand its hydrogen business and clean ammonia supply chain.
JERA Senior Managing Executive Officer and JERA Global Energy Solutions CEO Irtiza Sayyed said the partnership will help the companies explore practical ways to develop commercially viable hydrogen and ammonia markets in the region.
The collaboration supports JERA's goal of achieving net-zero carbon dioxide emissions across its domestic and international operations by 2050 under its Zero CO2 Emissions 2050 initiative.
