Korea, Malaysia discuss collaboration in LNG, hydrogen, and CCS

The two countries are going to participate in an overseas gas field project.

South Korea’s Deputy Minister for Energy Policy Lee Ho-hyeon recently met with Petronas’ Gas and Maritime Business CEO Datuk Adif Zulkifli to discuss energy cooperation between their countries.

The Malaysian state-owned energy giant is currently engaged in joint projects with Korean firms across different areas including liquefied natural gas (LNG), hydrogen, and carbon capture and storage (CCS).

For instance, there is an LNG supply contract between Petronas and Korean firms like Korea Gas Corporation. The two countries are also taking part in an overseas gas field project and expressed anticipation for continued LNG cooperation going forward.

Lee also asked for interest and support towards the green hydrogen and ammonia project in Sarawak with the participation of Korea National Oil Corporation and Samsung E&A.

Furthermore, he requested support for the Shepherd CCS Project between Korean firms and Petronas that will transport carbon dioxide from Korea to Malaysia for storage, noting their governments’ ongoing discussions on possibly entering a bilateral memorandum of understanding to assist cooperation in CCS areas.
