Meranti Power launches 682-MW hydrogen-ready OCGT facility on Jurong Island
This has the capacity to power over a million four-bedroom HDB homes.
Meranti Power Pte Ltd has launched its 682-megawatt (MW) Hydrogen-Ready Open Cycle Gas Turbine (OCGT) facility on Jurong Island.
In a statement, the wholly-owned subsidiary of the Energy Market Authority (EMA) said the facility comprises two 341 MW OCGT units that can come online to supply additional electricity within 10 minutes.
The OCGT can generate electricity for more than one million four-room HDB households once it reaches full capacity.
EMA commissioned Meranti Power in June 2022 to build the new OCGTs to replace ageing fast-start power generation capacity. Aside from their efficiency, the new turbines can reduce Singapore’s carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 4,000 tonnes for every 50 hours of operation – equivalent to the annual carbon absorption of about 200,000 Meranti trees.
The turbines are also hydrogen-ready, capable of co-firing up to 30% hydrogen.
The facility was delivered on schedule in 28 months by a consortium comprising Jurong Engineering Limited and Mitsubishi Power Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd, to design and build the 682 MW facility.
