OX2 breaks ground on 135 MW solar and 100 MW BESS in Australia

It is expected to generate around 347 GWh of electricity annually.

Renewable energy developer OX2 has begun construction of the Muswellbrook Solar Farm and Battery project in New South Wales, Australia.

The project includes 135 MWac of solar capacity and a 100 MW battery energy storage system (100 MW BESS). It is located in the Hunter Central Coast Renewable Energy Zone in New South Wales. It is expected to generate approximately 347 GWh of renewable electricity annually—enough to power around 52,000 homes.

The site is being developed on former coal mining land and was co-developed with Idemitsu Australia, which will remain a long-term landholder.

The project has secured a long-term hybrid power purchase agreement with an international offtaker covering both solar and storage output. Financing is led by Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group as Sole Structuring Coordinator and Mandated Lead Arranger, Underwriter, and Bookrunner.

Construction starts immediately, with completion expected in 2028.

OX2 said the project reinforces its long-term commitment to the Australian energy market, where it entered in 2023 and has since built a development pipeline exceeding 3 GW across solar, wind, and storage projects.

The company also confirmed it will fund community benefit initiatives through a Voluntary Planning Agreement with Muswellbrook Shire Council.
