Philippines and UK partner to streamline offshore wind and microgrid development
The agreement formalises collaboration under the UK PACT Philippines Country Fund.
The Philippine government has inked a letter of intent (LOI) with the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to fuel offshore wind and microgrid development in the Asian state.
In a statement, the Philippine Department of Energy (DOE) said the agreement formalises the collaboration under the UK Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions (UK PACT) Philippines Country Fund.
Under the energy sector priorities of the fund, the LOI establishes a framework for cooperation to deliver three technical assistance projects covering offshore wind and microgrid planning.
The first technical assistance project will support the DOE in developing a robust evaluation framework for infrastructure plans submitted by developers under the Green Energy Auction (GEA 5) for offshore wind.
Under the second phase, a comprehensive data collection framework will be developed for DOE priority microgrid sites to strengthen institutional capacity for microgrid planning and evidence-based decisions.
Lastly, the third technical assistance project will support the technical validation and peer review of the first-iteration results of the marine spatial planning process and its associated tool for the offshore wind use case.
The UK PACT Philippines Country Fund support will run until March 2027, with the DOE and the British Embassy in Manila also organising capacity-building activities.
