Onagawa-2 Nuclear Power Plant resumes power generation

Commercial operation is expected next month.

Tohoku Electric Power Company has announced that the Onagawa Nuclear Power Station Unit 2 (BWR, 825MW) has resumed power generation after being offline since 2011.

In a statement, the owner and operator of the plant said the facility resumed generating electricity and has been connected to the grid on 15 November.

It is expected to start commercial operation in December 2024 after completing all the pre-service inspection and the comprehensive inspection, and receiving confirmation certificate from the Nuclear Regulation Authority in Japan.

Various testing, inspections, and preparation works will be conducted before it can fully operate.
