Record heatwaves, economic recovery boost India’s electricity demand

The demand grew by 8.4% YoY in 2022.

India’s electricity demand posted a strong 8.4% year-on-year growth in 2022 due to the economic recovery and peak summer temperatures, according to a report by the International Energy Association (IEA).

The country’s hot season came earlier than usual, recording the hottest March in over a century. Its electricity demand from April to July was 14% higher than the same period in the previous year, whilst a record-peak power demand was seen on 10 June 2022 at 211 gigawatts.

The IEA said coal-fired generation primarily met the growth in summer demand with a 21.3% YoY growth from April to July 2022.

Electricity demand is expected to continue its growth by close to 5.6% on average annually from 2023 to 2025.
