AGL to look into potential battery recycling facility in Hunter Energy Hub

The Liddel and Baywater sites are being converted into the Hunter Energy Hub.

AGL signed a memorandum of understanding with battery recycling start-up Renewable Metal to conduct a pre-feasibility study to build a lithium battery recycling facility in AGL’s Hunter Energy Hub.

In a statement, AGL said the potential facility could be the first full-scale recycling facility of Renewable Metals with a target capacity of 5,000 tonnes each year initially.

AGL General Manager of Energy Hubs, Travis Hughes said the reuse of critical minerals is vital for the energy transition.

“This potential facility could recycle batteries from electric vehicles to grid-scale storage and is aligned with how we are thinking about bringing partners to our energy hubs who share our approach to minimising the environmental impact of the transition,” he said.

AGL aims to add around 12 gigawatts of new renewable generation and firming capacity by the end of 2035 as part of its climate contribution.

Renewable Metals launched its second pilot plant in Pert and is developing a demonstration plant for the proposed facility at Hunter Energy Hub.
