Australia's renewable sector investor inks new partnership for distributed energy platform

The partnership will support solar projects and storage assets.

Birdwood Energy, an Australia-based investor in renewable energy, partnered with local superannuation fund, Aware Super, as support for Birdwood’s deployment of distributed energy resources and Australia’s leadership in the global market for renewable energy.

The partnership covers the establishment of the Birdwood Distributed Energy Platform, which already acquired two solar farms that are enhanced by battery energy storage systems (BESS), invested in renewable assets, and prepared construction for 10 grid solar and battery projects.

The pipeline of the project will be comprised of small-scale distributed solar projects integrated with BESS and larger strategic projects, making a fast and efficient integration to the power grid, as well as energy transition.

According to news reports, Aware is looking to commit A$300m to the platform but they expect to grow their investment to up to A$2b.

Scott McGregor, Managing Partner of Birdwood Energy, said the sector may offer the cheapest and safest energy system, but they still require “investment at scale to achieve capital and operating efficiencies and hit our net zero targets.”

The Birdwood Distributed Energy Platform is expected to serve retail, commercial and industrial clients through offtake agreements.
