EDF Group-led consortium to develop large-scale green ammonia project in Oman

The consortium will have the right to build, operate and maintain the project for 47 years.

A consortium composed of Electricité de France S.A. and its subsidiary EDF Renewables (EDF Group), Electric Power Development (J-POWER) and YamnaCo will be developing a large-scale green ammonia project following an award of a land block by Hydrogen Oman SPC.

In a joint statement, the consortium said it will develop 4.5 gigawatts of wind and solar capacity along with battery storage and 2.5 GW of electrolyser to produce hydrogen which will be supplied to the ammonia project within the Salalah Free Zone.

The ammonia project, located within a land block within the Governorate of Dhofar spans over 341 square kilometres, and could produce one million tonnes of ammonia annually.

Hydrom and the consortium signed the Project Development Agreement and the Sub-Usufruct Agreement giving the consortium exclusive right to develop, build, operate and maintain the project for 47 years.

“Oman is strategically located between two key green hydrogen demand centres in Europe and Asia. This, in addition to, our tier-1 infrastructure and logistics capabilities have enabled us to leverage our first mover advantage in the global hydrogen industry,” Salim bin Nasse Al Aufi, minister of Energy and Minerals and chairman of Hydrom said.

“The availability of renewable natural resources in Oman coupled with the country’s favourable geopolitical positioning, investor-friendly policies and progressive energy transition strategies make it one of the most suitable countries for green hydrogen production,” the minister added.

Global clean energy tech market to hit $2t by 2035
This is fuelled by investments as countries aim to enhance energy security. The global clean energy technology market is projected to grow from $700b in 2023 to over $2t by 2035, nearing the scale of the crude oil market, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).This growth is fuelled by significant investments in clean technology manufacturing as countries aim to enhance energy security, maintain economic competitiveness, and cut emissions. Investment is concentrated in regions with established positions in clean energy, particularly China, the European Union, the UK, and increasingly, India.Whilst the US, EU, and India have taken measures to support their clean energy sectors, China is expected to remain the world's manufacturing hub. By 2035, China's clean technology exports are forecasted to exceed $340b—comparable to projected oil export revenues from Saudi Arabia and the UAE.Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Africa contribute less than 5% of global cleantech production value, yet the IEA suggests that these areas still hold opportunities within the clean energy economy. Developing economies, for instance, could leverage competitive advantages to advance in the value chain beyond resource extraction. The IEA said Southeast Asia could become one of the most cost-effective regions for producing polysilicon and wafers for solar panels over the next decade.
