EDP commissions 44 MWp solar project in Fukushima under long-term Amazon PPA

It is EDP’s largest solar project in Japan to date.

EDP Renewables APAC has commissioned a 44 MWp solar power plant in Fukushima, Japan, under a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Amazon to support its net-zero target by 2040.

The solar facility spans approximately 60 hectares of repurposed land, formerly a defunct golf course, and is equipped with more than 63,000 solar panels. It is currently EDP’s largest solar installation in Japan and is expected to generate over 48 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity annually.

The facility is now fully operational, recording over 98% energy availability and exceeding performance expectations during testing and commissioning.

This marks the second solar PPA between EDP and Amazon in Asia-Pacific, following a 2021 project in Singapore. Their collaboration began in 2015 with a wind project in Ohio and has since expanded globally.

"Our collaboration with EDP across multiple countries, including this solar project in Fukushima, is
critical to achieve Amazon's goal of reaching net-zero carbon across our operations by 2040,” said Cameron Evans, Director of APAC Infrastructure at Amazon Web Services. “By
repurposing land from a defunct golf course into a source of clean energy for the local grid, this
project shows how renewable energy investment can drive both environmental and community
renewal.”

EDP Renewables APAC CEO Miguel Fonseca said Japan represents a key growth market driven by rising electricity demand and electrification needs. “The market’s electricity demand is
expected to grow 5.3% over the next decade to over 846 billion kWh,” he said. “This demand presents a strategic opportunity, positioning Japan as a key growth market for advanced energy solutions in APAC.”

EDP plans to develop a domestic pipeline of over 500 MWp in Japan through 2030 and beyond. The company is also expanding into battery energy storage systems (BESS) to support grid stability and address renewable energy variability.
