Edra Melaka Power Plant achieves full commercial operation

With a 2,242 MW capacity, it is the largest combined CCGT in Southeast Asia.

Combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) Edra Melaka Power Plant (EMPP) has reached full commercial operation, adding 2,242-megawatts (MW) of electricity to Malaysia’s national grid.

In a statement, Edra Power Holdings Sdn Bhd’s (Edra) said the plant, composed of three generating blocks and achieved its commercial operation date at midnight on 28 February, is the largest CCGT power plant in Southeast Asia.

The first and second generating blocks of the plant, operated by Edra's wholly-owned subsidiary Edra Energy Sdn Bhd, started operations on 16 December 2021 and 31 January 2022, respectively.

Edra’s Chairman Dai Honggang said the power plant will generate around 19.6 billion kilowatt-hour electricity annually, contributing around 12% of the total power demand in Peninsular Malaysia. This is equivalent to providing power supply to four million homes for the next 21 years.

“The timing is apt as the demand for electricity has shown improvement in tandem with the economic reopening to support the country’s transition into the COVID-19 endemic phase. And EMPP’s contribution to the country’s generation capacity will definitely complement the growth of the various economic sectors,” the chairman said.

Edra also said in the statement that the development of the power plant has since generated over 2,500 job opportunities.

Construction works for the plant started in December 2017.
