India adds over 20 GW of solar capacity in 2024

Thanks to the commission of delayed projects.

India has increased its solar energy capacity by 25.2 gigawatts in 2024, surging from only 8.3 GW added the previous year.

According to Mercom India Research’s latest market update, this was driven by the “commissioning of a significant capacity of previously delayed projects.”

A total of 22 GW of large-scale solar projects were installed last year, up from 6.6 GW in 2023. This was led by Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, which accounted for 32%, 27%, and 8%, respectively.

In the fourth quarter, India added 7.8 GW of solar capacity, surging from 1.9 GW a year ago.

There were also 6.5 GW of large-scale projects installed during the quarter, up from 1.5 GW a year ago. This was fuelled by Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, comprising 44%, 17%, and 9% of the installations.

As of December 2024, India’s total solar capacity stood at 98.7 GW, with large-scale projects accounting for 86%, and rooftop solar nearly 14%. The states with the highest cumulative installed capacity are Rajasthan (28%), Gujarat (16%), and Karnataka (13%).
