India launches unit 1 of Ghatampur Thermal Power Project
The remaining two units will be commissioned by FY 2025 to 2026.
India has launched the first 660 megawatts (MW) of its 1,980 MW Ghatampur Thermal Power Project in Kanpur Nagar district, Uttar Pradesh.
In a statement, the Ministry of Coal said the project is a flagship initiative by Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Ltd (NUPPL), a collaboration of NLC India Limited (51%) and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL) (49%).
With a total project cost of INR 21,780.94 crore, the project comprises three supercritical thermal power units of 660 MW each. The remaining two units are expected to be commissioned by fiscal year 2025 to 2026.
The power purchase agreement has been made for 1,487.28 MW with Uttar Pradesh and 492.72 MW with Assam, subject to actual transfer of 20% equity share of UPRVUNL in NUPPL in favour of the Government of Assam.
The Ghatampur thermal project has adopted advanced environmental technologies, including Selective Catalytic Reduction and Flue Gas Desulphurization technologies for emissions, respectively. Furthermore, the project will have a zero liquid discharge system in place to ensure no water is discharged from the plant.
