Masdar, partners to study exporting green hydrogen to Europe

A green hydrogen supply chain will be established between Abu Dhabi and Amsterdam.

Masdar signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Port of Amsterdam, SkyNRG, Evos Amsterdam and Zenith Energy to explore the building of a green hydrogen supply chain for Abu Dhabi and Amsterdam.

Under the MoU, the green hydrogen will be produced in Abu Dhabi and will be exported to the Netherlands. The exported green hydrogen will be transported to key European sectors such as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), steelmaking, and shipping bunkering, and will also be supplied to emerging off-takers through a pipeline, truck and barge.

Masdar said in a statement that other hydrogen transportation methods will be studied but the focus will be on liquid organic hydrogen carriers and liquid hydrogen.

The Port of Amsterdam, the fourth-largest port in Europe is looking at ramping up its green hydrogen capabilities, whilst SkyNRG, is developing SAF production facilities that need green hydrogen as an input.

Meanwhile, Zenith Energy and Evos Amsterdan operate blending and storage terminals in the port. Zenith is developing a liquid hydrogen supply chain, whilst Evos is on a liquid organic hydrogen carrier supply chain.
