Myanmar floats 1GW solar tender

The government will award 20-year PPAs to select IPPs.

The government of Myanmar launched a 1GW solar tender, where project developers have been invited to submit pre-qualifying bids until 18 June for the construction of 30 ground-mounted solar PV plants with capacities ranging from 30MW to 40MW.

The country will award 20-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) to the selected independent power producers (IPPs) that will develop the project under a build, own and operate (BOO) basis.

The country targets an increase in the share of renewables in electricity production to 8% in 2021 and 12% in 2025. As of May, Myanmar’s solar capacity has reached 88MW (around 1% of total capacity), the power mix being dominated by hydropower (49%) and gas-fired plants (37%).
