Norwegian-built solar power plant goes on-grid in Japan

Plant built by Renewable Energy Corporation can generate 1.7MW.

The new facility located at Yonago, Tottori will provide electricity for over 500 Japanese households. It consists of 7,056 REC Peak Energy Series solar panels and will be able to generate over 1,840 MWh of green electricity per year. REC is the largest European supplier of solar panels.

The facility is REC’s latest venture in the Japanese solar market. Ownership of the plant is shared between Advantec and the Japanese radio & TV station Broadcasting System of San-in. Advantec is active in the solar electricity sector and has been a partner to REC in Japan since 2011.

“Japan is rapidly becoming a strong market for REC, and we’re delighted to be working with Advantec on this exciting project,” said Go Sekiguchi, REC Representative Director Japan.

REC opened an office in Tokyo last year to serve the expanding Japanese solar market and the new plant is geared towards an expansion of the company’s business.

REC is a solar power company with headquarters in Norway. It produces silicon materials for photovoltaic applications and multicrystalline wafers, as well as solar cells and modules.
