TNB explores advanced co-firing project in 2 thermal plants
It aims to apply 1% ammonia and 2% biomass co-firing in the power plants.
Malaysia’s Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and Japan’s IHI Corporation are conducting a joint study to implement a small-scale co-firing project at its Stesen Janakuasa Sultan Azlan Shah (SJSAS) and the Stesen Janakuasa Tuanku Mukhriz (SJTM).
Following a successful demonstration of burning 1% biomass, TNB President and CEN Dato’ Seri Ir. Baharin Din is moving to launch 1% ammonia and 2% biomass co-firing.
“This significant development aligns seamlessly with TNB’s ambitious 2050 net-zero goals, marking a substantial reduction in carbon emission intensity,” he said.

“The co-firing of 1% ammonia and 2% biomass is poised to offset carbon emissions equivalent to 71,000 passenger cars per year, underscoring the tangible environmental impact of this advancement," he added.
TNB is conducting the study through its subsidiaries TNB Power Generation and TNB Fuel Services.
At the same time, a 1% biomass co-firing demonstration has been successful at SJTM. The co-firing project is at the Front-End Engineering Design phase which will be completed by April 2024, with the initial stage of co-firing starting in the third quarter of 2026.
