Bangladesh govt wants more power for boro irrigation

The Bangladesh government has asked the Power Development Board to supply uninterrupted electricity to the rural areas for irrigation pumps during Boro season. The solution proposed was through rationing in urban areas.

Agricultural ministry has estimated that 1664 MW of electricity is needed to feed 2,46,000 electricity driven pumps.

The demand is 100 MW more than the previous year while the growth of demand for electricity in agriculture is 8 to 9 percent on an average.

According to the power division sources, all irrigation pumps will get electricity supply from 11:00 pm to 7:00 am uninterruptedly.

The demand of electricity in irrigation is growing since the cost of power driven pump is lower compared to the diesel driven pump.

But due to electricity generation shortage, the Rural Electrification Board could not meet the demand, sources added.

The REB authorities have submitted a US$42 million project titled "Improvement of existing distribution system to meet the demand of irrigation" to the planning commission to boost the irrigation.
