India extends coal mines’ star rating submissions deadline to 31 July

The extension aims to increase participation by allowing more mines to register and complete self-evaluations.

The Ministry of Coal of India has extended the deadline for the submission of self-evaluations for the star rating of coal and lignite mines for FY 2023-24 to 31 July.

The extension aims to boost participation, giving more mines the chance to register and complete the self-evaluation process.

The Star Rating policy assesses mines on seven parameters, namely mining operations, environment, technology adoption, best practices, economic performance, rehabilitation & resettlement, and worker safety & compliance.

The registration for the Star Rating evaluation began on 1 June. By 14 July, a record 388 mines had applied, the highest number since the program started in 2018-19.

The top 10% of mines with the highest scores will undergo further validation through inspections, whilst the remaining 90% will be reviewed online by the regional offices of the Coal Controller Organization.

The final reviews will be completed by 31 October, with results published by 31 January 2025.

Mines will receive ratings from Five Star to No Star based on the evaluations.
