Towngas committed to work with government on new hydrogen energy projects

Towngas also backs the government's policy for new hydrogen energy sources in Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) said it is committed to collaborating with the government on hydrogen energy projects as it supports the proposed policy measures for the promotion and use of new hydrogen energy sources in Hong Kong.

Don Cheng Hill-kwong, Head of Commercial – Hong Kong Utility of Towngas, said Towngas is "actively engaging in discussions with stakeholders regarding various hydrogen energy applications, whilst maintaining close contact with the Government."

The new policy presented a timeline for the application of hydrogen energy in Hong Kong, jumpstarting the development of the market’s hydrogen economy. Towngas’ support of the policy continues its commitment to carbon neutrality and Hong Kong’s “30-60” dual carbon goals.

Peter Wong Wai-yee, managing director of Towngas, assured that with the entire group’s support of the new energy policies. Towngas will also advance the development of its hydrogen energy trail projects.

These comprised a pipeline extraction project in Chai Wan and a trial project in Sai Kung, designated for charging electric vehicles.

The policy also indicates the full utilization of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by airline operators in Hong Kong. With its support, Towngas – via its investment in EcoCeres – is increasing the production capacity of SAF with a yearly production of 650,000 tonnes. The plan includes a new plant in Malaysia to boost production and supply to airlines.

Currently, Towngas is in talks with stakeholders about pending hydrogen energy applications and maintains close contact with the local government. It is set to commence construction of an eco-friendly methanol project in Inner Mongolia, wherein scrap tyres serve as raw materials for green methanol.
