Akaysha Energy and ITOCHU team up for large-scale energy storage in Japan
They aim to build at least 1 GW of projects in Japan.
Akaysha Energy, a leading battery developer in Australia, has recently entered into a strategic alliance with ITOCHU, a key player in Japan's battery ecosystem, to collaborate on utility-scale energy storage projects.
Tony Fullelove, Chief Development Officer at Akaysha, said the company sought to expand its footprint into the Japanese market and found a synergistic match with ITOCHU, one of Japan's leading battery ecosystem companies.
"We were looking for a strong partner...and there was a good synergy to have us join with ITOCHU to develop large-scale battery storage in Japan," Fullelove said.
This collaboration aims to leverage each company's strengths to foster the development of renewable energy projects, marking a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions in both countries.
The specific goals of the partnership include the development of at least a gigawatt of projects together in Japan.
“We are still working on greenfield development and development projects together to both participate in government auctions, and subsidy rounds. But beyond that, also just develop and construct really good large-scale batteries in Japan,” Fullelove said.
Ryota Michino, ITOCHU’s Supervisor of the Sustainable Energy Business Department said that the battery segment is booming in Japan.
“We are looking forward to building the project as soon as possible,” he said.
