Japan’s largest offshore wind farm begins commercial operation in Kitakyushu
It has 25 turbines with a total capacity of 220 MW.
Electric Power Development Co., Ltd., known as J-POWER, has announced that the Kitakyushu Hibikinada Offshore Wind Farm has commenced commercial operations.
The project, awarded in February 2017 through a public tender by Kitakyushu City, is operated by a consortium including J-POWER. Since being selected, Hibiki Wind Energy Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of J-POWER, has conducted surveys and preparations, with construction officially starting in March 2023.
The wind farm features 25 large-scale turbines, each generating 9,600 kW, bringing the total capacity to 220 MW. This makes it the largest offshore wind power plant in Japan. The facility is expected to maintain operations for the next 20 years.
J-POWER said that the project aligns with its “BLUE MISSION 2050” goal to achieve carbon neutrality, using its extensive experience in renewable energy to promote sustainable development and stable operation of wind power across the country.
