Asia's total coal-fired power generation to hit a whopping 6,749TWh in 2025

This is more than double the generation other regions produce.

Asia will by far register the biggest expansion in coal-fired power generation in the next 10 years, with total output from the technology growing from 5,601TWh in 2016 to 6,749TWh in 2025 - equal to more than double the total coal power generation found in all other regions combined.

According to a research note from BMI Research, given the relatively low cost of coal and widespread availability, countries in the Asia region continue to ramp-up their domestic coal-fired power capacity - with Asia accounting for around 70% of global coal-fired power generation in 2025.

Other than the two largest coal power markets in Asia (China and India), Vietnam, Pakistan, Indonesia, Philippines and South Korea are all notable examples of countries that are building up extensive coal capacity, with all having a coal-fired power project pipeline of more than 9 gigawatts (GW) according to BMI Research's Key Projects Database.
