India, Japan collaborate to study improvements of coal-fired plants

India's CEA and the Japan Coal Energy Center are studying the possibilities of efficiency and environment improvements at India's coal fired plants.

The purpose of this collaboration is to carryout necessary diagnostic activities for selected coal-fired power plants.

This includes energy efficient renovation and modernization works, finding out measures to overcome barriers to promote R&M and topromote efficiency and environmental improvements at coal-fired power plants in thecountry.

So far, based on JCOAL`s preliminary studies, two units have been finalized for further studies under the second phase. These include the 210MW Vijay Wada TPS unit-I of APGENCO and the 200 MW Wanakhori TPS Unit-I of GSECL.

In addition, the 210 MW Unit 2 of NTPC`s Kahelgaon STPS has also been finalized for further detailed studies.

JCOAL has put up a proposal for an MoU to be signed among Central Electricity Authority, JBIC and itself to carry out a second phase of studies.
