Singapore energy efficiency measures for industry take effect
Mandatory energy management requirements are for large industrial companies.
Singapore introduced the requirements to improve the country’s energy efficiency and competitiveness. The new requirements are provided for under the Energy Conservation Act. They cover 170 companies that operate about 200 energy intensive premises.
The requirements define large energy users as entities whose activities used more than 54 terajoules of energy per year in at least two of the three preceding years and whose business activities are into or related to manufacturing services; supply of electricity, gas, steam, compressed air and chilled water for air-conditioning or water supply and sewage and waste management.
The National Environment Agency said these companies are required to register themselves and select one or more energy managers to monitor and manage their energy consumption. They are also required to report their energy consumption and provide information on processes resulting in greenhouse gas emissions and submit energy efficiency improvement plans annually starting 2014.
The industry sector accounts for over 50% of Singapore’s energy demand.
