Southeast Asia’s largest wind farm goes fully commercial in 2013

Two massive wind farm projects will account for a sixth of Thailand’s planned total wind power capacity.

The Huay Bong 2 and 3 Wind Farm projects located in Nakhon Ratchasima province will each generate 103.5 MW of electricity. Huay Bong 2, which is 30% complete, is expected to begin commercial operations this year while Huay Bong 3 will go online in February 2013.

The wind farm is a project of state-controlled Ratchaburi Electricity Generating Holding, a leading investment company in the power generation business. The firm invested US$197 million for Huay Bong 2 and US$210 million for Huay Bong 3.

CEO To Noppol Milinthanggoon said the two projects mark the establishment of the largest wind farm in Thailand and Southeast Asia. The projects respond to the government's renewable energy policy, help reduce CO2 emissions and lessen Thailand’s dependence on fossil fuels.

Thailand intends to derive 9,201 megawatts from RE sources by 2021. Of this total, 1,200 MW will come from wind energy.
