Philippines to promote renewable energy use

The Philippines is set to launch the first National Renewable Energy Program, which mandates the development and use of the country’s renewable energy resources.

Energy Secretary Jose Rene Almendras said the NREP is consistent with Republic Act 9513 or the Renewable Energy Act which mandates the full .

Almendras said the NREP outlines the national renewable energy targets and trajectories in the energy and power mix for the short- to long-term.

NREP also contains a framework for action, existing and future measures, instruments and policies for the promotion of renewable energy and a roadmap which will guide efforts toward actualizing the market penetration targets of each RE resource in the country.

In the launch, it is also expected that RE will be recognized as a vital part of a long-term strategy and integrated approach for growth and poverty alleviation.

“As such, aside from the large investments and hundred-megawatt projects, equal importance should be given to small projects that will improve the lives of remote or poor communities,” according to the NREP agenda.

The government will likewise maximize development of RE to fasttrack and expand development opportunities in the rural areas.

Based on the RE roadmap, it will help translate clean energy opportunities into long term benefits for the people.
