Japan to continue exporting nuclear technology

Japan decided exporting nuclear power generation technology after reviewing its policy.

The Cabinet approved a document, saying that Japan should provide nuclear energy technology to countries that wish to have it and ensure that the technology's safety is of the highest global standards.

The latest move, which effectively gives priority to maintaining good diplomatic ties with countries with which Japan has already entered negotiations to export such technology.

The ongoing nuclear crisis in Japan subsequently forced the government to review the nation's basic energy policy.

The document, which is a reply to an opposition lawmaker's question, said Japan will proceed with negotiations with other countries on nuclear power cooperation, which had been stalled since the disaster, so as not to damage bilateral trust.

It also said the government will continue to call for Diet approval of nuclear energy cooperation pacts with four nations -- Jordan, Vietnam, Russia and South Korea.

The parliament, whose current session ends in late August, has been deliberating the pacts.
