Tata Power to invest $380m for solar manufacturing plant dev't in India

It will have a production capacity of 4GW for each solar cell and module.

Tata Power has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Tamil Nadu Government to invest around $380m (INR3,000 crores) to build a greenfield four-gigawatt (GW) solar cell and 4GW solar module manufacturing plant in the state.

In a statement, Tata Power said the investment for the plant, which will be set up in Tirunelveli District, will be made over 16 months and will create over 2,000 employment opportunities.

"India has opportunity to spearhead the usage of clean and green energy solutions to meet its energy requirements. Tata Power Solar's new production facility is being set up with the support and assistance of Tamil Nadu Government, will help to meet the rising demand for clean energy solutions in the country apart from providing huge employment opportunities," Tata Power CEO and Managing Director Praveer Sinha said at the memorandum signing.

It said that the new plant would combine Mono-Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell Bifacial Technology with future n-Type technology of Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contacts. It will produce high-wattage modules.

The new plant will utilise autonomous mobile robots, which will use lasers and cameras for transporting parts, to ensure smooth equipment navigation.

Tata Power added the plant will implement Industry 4.0 standards which is a “fully interconnected factory comprising smart manufacturing tools and technologies.”

The Tamil Nadu facility will be Tata Power’s second manufacturing unit following Bangalore which has a production capacity of 635 megawatts (MW) of modules and 500MW cells
