India commences 1st green hydrogen blending

It was done in the pipe natural gas network of NTPC Kawas township, Surat.

NTPC, India’s largest power generation, has started the first green hydrogen blending in India in its piped natural gas (PNG) network at NTPC Kawas township in Surat.

In a statement, NTPC said the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board has approved the 5% vol./vol. blending of green hydrogen with PNG initially and the blending level would be increased in phases to reach 20%.

Green hydrogen and natural gas blending cut carbon dioxide emissions, “keeping net heating content same,” it said.

The project was jointly developed by NTPC and Gujarat Gas Limited.

“This feat is achieved only by a few select countries like the UK, Germany, and Australia etc. This would bring India at the centre stage of the global hydrogen economy. India would not only reduce its hydrocarbon import bill significantly but can also bring forex ashore by being a green hydrogen and green chemicals exporter to the world,” NTPC said.
