Shell Energy to develop 500MW/100MWh battery project in Australia

The project will be connected to the 300kV Wallerawang Substation.

Shell Energy has acquired the development rights for a battery energy storage system (BESS) project with a capacity of 500-megawatt (MW) /1,000 MW-hour in New South Wales in Australia.

In a statement, Greenspot, which secured the development approval for the project, said Shell will be responsible for the grid connection process and operating the battery on the 20 hectares of land that it will lease.

The project will be established within the Wallerawang power station site where two 500MW coal-fired generating units were located but were decommissioned in 2014.

It will be connected to the adjacent 330-kilovolt Wallerawang Substation which was used to transmit coal-fired electricity generation to the grid.

Greenspot has also identified 200 hectares more of the 620-hectare site as an employment hub for high-tech industries.
