MW Energy to develop 500 MW clean energy projects in Tajikistan

This will include floating solar, wind and hydropower projects.

MW Energy, a joint venture between Masdar and W Solar Investment signed an agreement with the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan to study to potential development of at least 500 megawatts (MW) of clean energy projects.

In a statement, Masdar said the agreement, which marks its entry to Tajikistan, will cover floating solar power, wind and hydropower projects through a Public-Private Partnership.

The first phase aims for a total capacity of 500 MW.

Tajikistan, a landlocked and water-abundant country, relies on hydropower for energy generation but has a “huge potential” for other emerging renewable energy sources.

Daler Jum’a, Minister of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan, said the country aims to reach 700 megawatts (MW) of solar and wind energy generating stations by 2030. 

Around 450 MW is under development through a feasibility study backed by international consulting companies and financial institutions.

“Tajikistan is committed to increasing its installed electricity generation capacity and growing its promising green energy sector.  Our land is blessed with many natural resources, and we look forward to working with partners to harness this potential and meet our energy and development goals,” the minister said.
