Tibet Development and Investment Group honoured with two wins at Asian Power Awards

It upgraded its PV project’s supporting chemical energy storage infrastructure in 2022.

Tibet Development and Investment Group received two titles at the recently held Asian Power Awards for its construction of a groundbreaking 20 MW photovoltaic (PV) power generation project in Gangba County.

It won the Solar Power Project of the Year - China and the Battery Storage Project of the Year - Bronze categories.

Committed to furthering its collaboration with power grid operations and peak shaving, the company undertook a significant upgrade to its PV project's supporting chemical energy storage infrastructure in 2022. By the end of the same year, the project was seamlessly integrated into the grid, ready to contribute to power generation.

This upgrade initiative showcased two 2MW/10MWh lithium iron phosphate energy storage units. Each unit comprises an inverter and booster integrated machine along with two energy storage battery cabins. The configuration of a single inverter and booster integrated machine consists of four 500kW energy storage converters and step-up transformers.

Meanwhile, each energy storage battery compartment houses two sets of 2.5 MWh battery stacks. These stacks are converted into AC 690V by two 500kW converters, and the AC outputs from these four converters are ingeniously connected in parallel to the low-voltage winding of the outdoor box-type transformer—each boasting a capacity of 2280kVA.

Harsh natural environments, however, such as high altitude and high cold have brought great challenges to the construction of the project, and at the same time put forward higher requirements for core equipment such as inverters, earning it the distinction of being the world's very first high-altitude inverter-integrated PV power station project.

This did not stop the company from making several breakthroughs amidst its pioneering of the inverter-integrated PV power station and supporting chemical energy.

Firstly, its operational forecast predicts an annual increase in average power generation capacity by three million kWh. This translates to conserving approximately 369 tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by around 996 tons per year.

Secondly, the project takes the lead in advocating for environmental preservation within the Tibetan region, facilitating the establishment of national clean energy bases, new power system demonstration zones, and exemplary clean renewable energy utilisation demonstration zones.

Ultimately, upon project completion, Tibet Development and Investment Group proudly holds the title of being the world's foremost inverter-integrated PV power station and supporting chemical energy storage projects situated at an altitude of 4555m or higher. Notably, it stands as one of the most technically intricate, operating environment-challenging, and highest-altitude PV power station energy storage projects in China from 2022 to 2023.

“Our journey embodies our unwavering commitment to innovation, excellence, and pioneering spirit. Our achievements in high-altitude PV power generation, combined with cutting-edge energy storage solutions, redefine the possibilities in the renewable energy landscape. With a resilient approach and unparalleled achievements, we are excited to contribute to the future of sustainable power generation,” the company said.

The Asian Power Awards, now in its 19th year, celebrates and honours companies and projects that have taken innovative and game-changing steps to address the effects of the climate crisis and meet the growing demand for energy.
