Ørsted launches Asia's largest offshore wind farm in Taiwan

The 900 MW wind farm is part of the 2.4 GW Greater Changhua offshore wind zone.

Ørsted began the operation of Taiwan’s Greater Changhua 1 and 2a offshore wind farm with a total installed capacity of 900 megawatts (MW), making it the largest offshore wind project in the region.

In a statement, Ørsted said the Greater Changhua 1 and 2a could produce electricity that could power around one million households and reduce 1.75 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.

The project, which began construction in March 2021, comprises 111 Siemens Games SG 8.0-167 DD wind turbines.

“This project has spearheaded the establishment of the domestic offshore wind industry as well as contributed significantly to Taiwan’s energy transition and net-zero goals,” Per Mejnert Kristensen, CEO of Region APAC at Ørsted, said.

The Greater Changhua 1, which has a 605.2 MW capacity, is co-owned equally by Ørsted and Mercury Taiwan Holdings, a consortium of CDPQ and Cathay PE.

The Greater Changhua 2a is fully owned by Ørsted.

Ørsted said the projects are part of the Greater Changua offshore wind zone composed of Greater Changhua 2b, Greater Changhua 3, and Greater Changhua which has a total capacity of 2.4 gigawatts.
