Masdar to develop ‘24/7’ renewable energy project in Kazakhstan

This will be composed of clean power sources and energy storage.

Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) and Samruk-Kazyna JSC have formalised the agreement to develop a “24/7” renewable energy project in Kazakhstan.

In a statement, Masdar said the project will provide up to 500 megawatts (MW) of baseload renewable energy, and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects with up to 2 gigawatts (GW) capacity.

His Excellency Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and chairman of Masdar, and Nurlan Zhakupov, CEO of Samruk-Kazyna, exchanged documents related to the agreement at the Presidential Palace in Astana.

During the ceremony, the ratification of the agreement between the governments of UAE and Kazakhstan for the development of the 1 GW wind project was also announced.

The project, being developed by Masdar, will also have a 600 megawatt-hour (MWh) BESS. This is set to be one of the largest wind projects in Central Asia.

Kazakhstan aims to generate 15% of its electricity from renewable energy sources by 2030 and 50% by 2050.

Masdar considers the country, along with the rest of Central Asia, as a strategic region as it eyes a 100 GW global portfolio capacity by 2030.
