Masdar enters PPA for 1 GW wind farm in Kazakhstan

Construction will commence Q1 2026.

Abu Dhabi-based Masdar has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Financial Settlement Centre for Renewable Energy Sources Support LLP for its one gigawatt (GW) wind farm in the Jambyl region of Kazakhstan.

The signing of the PPA came after Masdar signed the investment agreement for the project with the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan, which is set to be one of the largest wind farms in the Commonwealth of Independent States region.

“This project is a major addition to our portfolio and plays an important role in ensuring we meet our target of 100 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030,” said Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi.

The 1 GW wind farm will be Masdar’s inaugural project in Kazakhstan. The company is the lead developer along with W Solar, Qazaq Green Power, and the Kazakhstan Investment Development Fund.

Construction of the wind farm, which will also feature a 600-megawatt-hour battery energy storage system, will commence by the first quarter of 2026. When completed, it will power around 300,000 homes in the south of Kazakhstan, avoiding 2 million tonnes of carbon emissions per year.
