India’s coal production hits 1 billion tonnes
It is driven by Coal PSUs and private players.
India’s coal production reached one billion tonnes (BT) on 20 March, 11 days ahead of last year’s total output of 997.83 million tonnes (MT), according to India’s Ministry of Coal.
The increase is driven by Coal Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), private players, and the dedicated workforce of around 5 lakh mine workers across more than 350 coal mines.
The government said coal accounts for 55% of India’s energy mix, with 74% of electricity generated from coal-based power plants.
Government reforms, including changes to the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act and private-sector coal auctions, have boosted domestic supply. From April to December 2024, coal imports fell 8.4%, saving $5.43b (₹42,315.7 crore) in foreign exchange.
The milestone supports India’s goal of energy self-sufficiency under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and strengthens its push for long-term energy security.
