IndiGrid Infrastructure Trust wins at Asian Power Awards 2025

The company was recognised for advancing India’s battery energy storage landscape.

IndiGrid Infrastructure Trust won Innovative Power Technology of the Year - India in the Asian Power Awards 2025. The recognition highlights its achievement in developing the Kilokari battery energy storage system (BESS), which is India’s first regulated, utility-scale project of its kind.

Formed in 2016, IndiGrid Infrastructure Trust is the country’s first and largest publicly listed power sector Infrastructure Investment Trust. With assets under management exceeding INR324b, the company owns and operates 43 power projects, including transmission lines, substations, solar generation capacity, and battery storage systems. Its portfolio delivers predictable, AAA-rated cash flows whilst contributing to India’s energy reliability and sustainability goals.

The Kilokari BESS project, with a capacity of 20 MW/40 MWh, was commissioned in just 10 months despite significant challenges. Located at a high-demand distribution substation in a densely populated area, the site required careful coordination with local authorities, strict compliance with safety regulations, and innovative engineering solutions. Space limitations, ageing infrastructure, and proximity to residential buildings, a hospital, a metro line, and a religious site added to the complexity of the undertaking.

Despite these hurdles, the project was completed on schedule and within budget. It is certified under the IEC 62933 system-level BESS standards and features a four-tiered safety architecture. The facility supports multiple applications, such as improving power quality and ensuring an uninterrupted electricity supply, which are essential for urban centres. The project is remotely monitored for efficient operations and is supported by onsite maintenance to ensure reliable performance.

The Asian Power Awards celebrates the innovative and groundbreaking projects and initiatives in the power sector. Dubbed as the “Oscars” of the power industry, the awards programme honours companies that have taken game-changing steps to meet the growing energy demand.
