Eraring extension stabilises NSW electricity supply
The extension also supports NSW’s 2030 emissions targets.
Origin Energy will continue operating Eraring Power Station until April 2029, the company has told the NSW Government, the Australian Stock Exchange, and the Australian Energy Market Operator.
The extension provides certainty for workers, energy consumers, and the market, whilst supporting NSW’s 2030 emissions targets.
NSW energy officials said the state will have enough supply when Eraring closes, thanks to new renewable generation and storage coming online.
Since the last election, renewable capacity in NSW has increased by nearly 70%, equivalent to Eraring’s output.
The 2024 agreement with Origin has not cost NSW taxpayers any money.
