New South Wales approves 15-MW green hydrogen and ammonia project

Facility to produce 4,500 tonnes of ammonia annually.

The New South Wales government has approved a 15-megawatt green hydrogen and ammonia project in Moree to help farms cut emissions and transition to cleaner energy.

Backed by $45.2m in state funding, the Good Earth Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Project will be among the first large-scale renewable hydrogen production facilities in the state.

The more than $70m development is a joint venture between Hiringa Energy Pty Ltd and Sundown Pastoral Company and has now reached financial close following approval from the Minns Labor Government.

Once operational, the plant will produce enough green hydrogen to generate about 4,500 tonnes of ammonia per year, which will be used as a low-carbon fuel and fertiliser.

Most of the production will supply Sundown’s Keytah cotton farm, allowing the operation to phase out diesel and fertilisers produced using fossil fuels.

Any surplus ammonia will be available to other farming operations in the Moree region, helping reduce emissions in agriculture, a sector traditionally reliant on fossil fuels.

The project is expected to create around 60 jobs during construction and 10 permanent roles once the facility begins operations.

Officials said the development also demonstrates how decentralised ammonia production can improve sustainability by reducing the need for long-distance freight while helping establish a commercial-scale green hydrogen and ammonia supply chain in northern New South Wales.
