MGEN strengthens PH energy stability through diversified power portfolio
The company expands solar, battery storage, and thermal capacity.
Meralco PowerGen Corporation (MGEN) reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the Philippine's energy security through a diversified energy portfolio amidst rising global fuel costs and supply uncertainties.
MGEN said its strategy supports the government’s evolving energy policies by combining renewable energy, battery storage, natural gas, and baseload power generation to ensure reliable and affordable electricity supply.
“Our priority is to help ensure a reliable and secure power supply whilst supporting the country’s evolving energy mix," said MGEN President and CEO Emmanuel V. Rubio. "As more renewable energy comes into the system, maintaining adequate and dependable capacity remains essential to meet demand and support grid stability."
Through affiliate Terra Solar Philippines Inc., MGEN energized the first 250 megawatts (MW) of solar capacity in March 2026, marking the start of its contribution as a power generator to the national grid.
At the same time, MTerra Solar also launched the first tranche of its battery energy storage system (BESS), capable of delivering up to 450 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity during nighttime hours using stored solar energy. The facility is currently considered the largest operational BESS in the Philippines.
MGEN Renewables also operates more than 400 MWac of solar capacity across several Luzon provinces, including Bulacan, Rizal, Batangas, and Tarlac.
In addition to renewables, MGEN’s natural gas portfolio includes investments in LNGPH and PacificLight Power Pte. Ltd. in Singapore, which support lower-carbon and flexible power generation.
As part of its diversified portfolio, MGEN said it continues to invest in baseload capacity to support system reliability through MGEN Thermal, which operates a mix of baseload and dispatchable power plants across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
Key facilities include Panay Energy Development Corporation in Iloilo and Cebu Energy Development Corporation in Cebu, which provide stable power supply to major areas in the Visayas.
MGEN said it continues to optimise its thermal portfolio and undertake capacity additions to address future system requirements.
Amongst its ongoing projects are the development of the MGEN Toledo BESS, with Phase 1 targeted for completion in 2026, expansions of its thermal facility in Toledo, Cebu, and the planned development of a 1,200-MW ultra-supercritical (USC) coal-fired power plant in Atimonan, Quezon Province.
The Atimonan facility will utilize High-Efficiency, Low-Emissions (HELE) technology aimed at improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions intensity. The project is expected to begin operations by 2030 and is projected to supply around 7% of Luzon’s total electricity demand.
The company said these investments aim to support grid reliability, energy security, and the country’s growing electricity demand through 2040.
