Indian power demand on the way down

NTPC reduced power generation at a number of its plants over the past few months due to lower grid demand.

This shortfall in generation has brought down plant load factors observed at various power stations run by the National Thermal Power Corporation.

Thus NTPC has petitioned the Union Power Ministry to set capacity addition targets for the 12th Plan on the basis of realistic demand estimates in the country.

The public sector power firm has an operational generation capacity of 33,194 MW at present and plans to ramp up to 75,000 MW by 2017.
