TNB, PETRONAS to explore green hydrogen development in Malaysia

This is in line with Malaysia’s carbon-neutral targets.

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and PETRONAS have partnered to conduct a collaborative study for the development of green hydrogen ecosystem in and carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology in Malaysia. 

The memorandum of understanding is intended to support Malaysia’s 2050 target to achieve carbon neutrality. 

“The timing to embark on this effort is also perfect as the Government is scheduled to launch the National Energy Policy 2021-2040 soon that will outline Malaysia’s transition to green energy,” Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, Energy and Natural Resources Minister, said.

The MoU was signed by TNB President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Dato’ Indera Ir. Baharin Din and PETRONAS President and Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Datuk Tengku Muhammad Taufik.

Aside from the study, the parties will also look into developing green hydrogen fuel for power generation as well as intensify efforts to co-create green hydrogen ecosystem. This is to provide clean energy solutions in Malaysia and other markets. 

As a first step, TNB and PETRONAS will begin with the re-powering of the retired Sultan Ismail Power Station of TNB.
