Floating nuclear plants and SMRs weighed for Singapore energy security

The study will assess advanced nuclear’s fit with Singapore’s geography and regulations.

The Centre for Strategic Energy and Resources, with funding support from Equinix, will conduct a study on the potential role of advanced nuclear energy technologies in Singapore’s energy security and industrial development.

The study will examine the feasibility and implications of deploying small modular reactors and floating nuclear power plants to meet the country’s growing demand for reliable, low-carbon, 24/7 power.

The demand is primarily attributed to the rapid expansion of energy-intensive, high-value sectors such as data centres, semiconductors, and advanced manufacturing.

Meanwhile, the research will also examine deployment and implementation factors relevant to Singapore’s geographic, regulatory, and system-level context.

It will take a vendor-neutral approach, combining demand-side analysis with a techno-economic assessment of nuclear technologies compared with existing power generation options.
