Genesis Energy, NZGIF endorse switch from fossil fuels

Van Lier Nurseries will be the first company to switch from gas-fired boilers to electric.

Genesis Energy and New Zealand Green Investment Finance (NZGIF) have initiated a cooperative effort to assist businesses with replacing fossil-fuelled heating sources with electricity.

Van Lier Nurseries Limited will be the first Genesis client to see its gas-fired boiler switched to a cutting-edge 1-megawatt low-emission heat pump.

Genesis and NZGIF cooperated with the assembly of the pilot for the cut flower producer, utilising a green-based solution for industrial companies on their adherence to environmentally friendly energy sources. Genesis will also manage the heat pump, which is expected to be greener and slicker than traditional gas boilers.

Van Lier Nurseries anticipates 640 tonnes of carbon emissions to be saved yearly through the new pump’s 25-year life.

Genesis has brought a lot of expertise, dealing with the complexities of design, integration and compliance that are well outside our understanding and skill. This has allowed us to keep focusing on our core business,” Joanne Hurley, COO of Van Lier Nurseries, said.

“Electricity companies like Genesis can help industry convert from fossil-fuelled energy to electric. That’s good for industry, the country and the planet,” Ed Hyde, Chief Transformation and Technology Officer of Genesis, stated about the importance of energy transition in New Zealand.
